Ok, but the reverence for the anthem thing in the 2000's was also definitley driven by post-9/11 patriotism. Our entire generation was traumatized into thinking being patriotic was THE cool thing to be. Remember Old Navy flag shirts??? They were so cool! What a wild time. Loved this first entry, looking forward to more! (also, I just happen to be wearing my "which cage are you" shirt today lol

I always stand , take my hat off for the national anthem. We are not perfect and never were. We have to fight to get back to our ideal. But if you have ever stood a post in another country and the National Anthem is played it takes on a more personal meaning.

Oh, totally! And I think a huge reason why the Whitney performance of the Star Spangled Banner was so powerful was because she’s performing under ideal conditions. I mean, Whitney Houston was a superstar and she could perform like that in front of a bored crowd of four. But in that performance, she was performing in front of a crowd of tens of thousands of Americans at a football game. And ten days after the start of the Gulf War. There’s a lot of facets to it.
